Yokiro is a vaguely historical piece, set at a time when the geisha system was finding its place in Japan. Sakuran gave me a good idea of how the oiran system worked in the Edo period; by the 20th...consciously artsy piece, but in a cold and distant way. It doesn't really engage the viewer much, and it's pretty forgettable. I saw it 3 months ago, so I'm pretty fuzzy by now. See also: IMDB

Millions ***/***** I didn't understand and really disliked the first part of the book. It was a very child-like film and I couldn't take a lot of it seriously. I started to enjoy it for what it was towards the end, but the subject matter didn't really grasp me. Interesting concept, though.

I am generally a big fan of gay rights, so between critical acclaim and subject matter, I was primed to like this one. And it did not disappoint. It it basically the Sean Penn show, and Sean Penn displays...surprise me (given how few opportunities women had to operate on the political scene at the time).
