Last night the Seattle Supersonics, better known as the Sonics, played their first game of the new NBA season as the Oklahoma City Thunder.   Sonics. Thunder.   Gah! We already presaged this conversion in 4e by changing sonic damage to thunder damage.   I hope it wasn’t sympathetic magic.

4e has spolied me for the rest of the hobby. I've been voraciously buying, reading and playing for the last 6 months. I've never had such sustained good times in my 30 years of gaming. I've had better peaks, and much, much worse troughs, but this damn game just bloody works. I can always find something to buy that looks good, is interesting and useful. Session Ten: Wolfpack, Tactics (800 XP) (Total 6596 XP) The Keepers rest for the night in the fortified ruins of the Observatory Tower. They've freed twenty-eight Vastulm men from mind-controlled slavery..."false sense of security" gambit that worked so well on the Slothe Tor goblins. That didn't work out, but that's all right... it's nearly dark and this is now a very safe place to spend the night.

This struck me yesterday while reflecting on comments from people like mearls and rob_donoghue about encounter design for D&D 4th edition: Include at least one movable, usable object... It could be a table, a chair, a brazier, a bookcase, an orrery, whatever. Just make it something the PCs can pick up, shove around, or otherwise manipulate. And, perhaps, that their enemies can too

We had our second session at last, and all I can do is quote.... DM: Jervis, this little bridge you're on crosses a pit of lava. We're playing through H2 in the series now and the game has taken a slightly new direction. H1 was a nod to the classic Keep on the Borderlands module for old school D&D but this one is much more open...party balked at all of them apart from tag the pig, which was just a bit of flavour that I was foreshadowing for later session! Just goes to show how hard it is for everyone to get on the same page

Another good session, from my point of view. The set piece this time was a trap encounter, a freshly abandoned dig site operated by malevolent NPCs now on the run, loaded up with all kinds of goodies. There was very little actual injury, but (from my point of view, at least) a high level of suspense, and I liked that a lot. More later. :)
