Most commercial solar cells are only about 7-11% efficient- meaning they collect very little of the energy that they could be picking up. Even the very best panels used on satellites and such are only...the energy distribution/storage issues with solar....there are some cool experiments going on with electrolysis-> hydrogen fuel and extremely-high heat capacity materials floating around there....
