Happy Birthday, Mr Adams, pics and a meme

Born October 30, 1735, happy 273rd birthday to President John Adams ... John, you don't look a day over 200. Here's his birthplace: Here is the street view of the Adams farm (this...marriage, and you don't want it "protected" by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow. My additions (and mine, too): Vote NO on 2 (in Florida)!!! Vote NO on 8 (in California)!!

Liberty and Benevolence

Liberty and Benevolence AN OPEN LETTER to 171 Congressmen and 25 Senators by Howard S. Katz 10-6-08 Dear Congressman or Senator: The week ending Oct. 4, 2008 now goes down in history as a dark day for...rich can steal from the poor so easily, they are sure to try it again. A new era has begun in American politics, and the week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 4 was a defining moment. Sincerely, Howard S. Kat

AHH

Just spent the last 2 hours cramming for history test. I think that's probably the first time I've ever actually studied for a test. I really need to do good on it though because I have a c in that class...to put in the computer because I am about 2 percentage points away from a B. I used almost an entire package of sticky notes. There is now a section of pink-ish-orange alon the side of the textbook

Cartwheeling through American History

Every time I take a Morgan Silver Dollar in my hand, I am overwhelmed by two things. First, by its sheer size; next, by the fascinating story behind what is arguably the most historic coin in American...Florida. In addition to his role as Chief Numismatist, Mr. Johnson will serve as the spokesperson and "face" of The Franklin Mint for any future television programs for medallic art and coin products.

Copperheads

56.  Copperheads: The Rise and Fall of Lincoln's Opponents in the North, by Jennifer Weber.  217 pages.  (2006) Grade: B This is a history of the "Peace Democrats," alias the "Copperheads," in the Union during the Civil War.  The material was interesting, but it read like a Ph.D thesis that made it into print - which I suspect is exactly what it is.

The meme Supreme

[with thanks to a> shalmestere .] As was demonstrated in an interview with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin is unable to name any Supreme Court Case other than* Roe v. Wade. The Rules: Post info about... My great-grandmother had 14 children who lived . The history major in me feels obligated to give you a reference for further reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Griswold_v._Connecticut

Writer's Block: Independence Day

In recognition of Mexican Independence Day, tell us how you celebrate your own Independence. View other answers By regularly defacing statues of King George III and chucking shipments of tea into various harbors.  Oh, and arguing with them damned anti-federalists.

NYC in a Weekend.

Our trip began when we arrived at the hotel amongst a ton of cops. 6th Avenue was practically closed off, the entrance to the hotel inaccessible. The taxi had to drop us at the sidewalk, next to a couple...!? There are a few more shots in the photo galleries, especially of the Statue of Liberty, I took a ton. ;) Ellis & Liberty Islands: Full Gallery ° Slideshow NYC: Full Gallery ° Slideshow

Monks Mound

From the top, we could see St. Louis's distinctive skyline, with the Gateway Arch. It was a hot, sunny day, but not as hot as one might expect for southern Illinois in August. We had walked up the stairway...Without the interpretive center, all you'd see are what look like funny-shaped hills in a farm field. A whole culture that had been buried and forgotten, only recently to be rediscovered and explored
