Voice

Turns out I have more to say about voice. Backlash against The Catcher in the Rye seems to have become fashionable, but this is the novel I always think of first when I think of voice. I reread Catcher...that the voice in a draft project just isn't strong enough to carry that work.  In such cases, I'll set aside the project.  Sometimes, later, I end up telling that same story through a different voice.

My first book review and ratings

So recently I've plowed through Lolita ,  Hitchhiker's Guide , and The Two Towers in about a week's time - not a bad pace.  My basic goal is to whoosh through a list of the generic "top 100 must read...from having a relationship on equal or common terms. In all, it's an amazing read and it makes us think about where we are to draw clear sexual moral boundaries in a volatile society. Rating:  9/1

A Clockwork Orange

by Anthony Burgess   Description (from book cover): In Anthony Burgess's nightmare vision of the future, where the criminals take over after dark, teh story is told by the central character, Alex,... was Alex's love for classical music...talk about irony.  To top it all off, there is tons of symbolism (I should know, I wrote a paper about it) that makes me want to reread it so I don't miss anything.

Anthony Burgess "A Clockwork Orange"

Goodness is something to be chosen. When a man cannot choose he ceases to be a man.

Burgess, Anthony | A Clockwork Orange

Thanks to the late, great director Stanley Kubrick, Anthony Burgess' classic novella has become synonymous with bowler hats and old Gene Kelly songs. Yes, the film is indeed a masterpiece, but don't be...equally terrifying society to put him it. Orange is disturbing, graphic, and intense, but it's a terrific read, and it will change your life-even without the bad eye makeup. In your face, Kubrick

A Clockwork Orange - Conclusion

Referring back to the Introduction of the novel, Burgess contemplates the importance, or lack thereof, of the last chapter (the 21st chapter). What happened was the novel was published in Europe with the... in a sense, become mature; rendering this chapter as extremely significant. It is my belief this chapter is the MOST significant of all in the novel and it is of utmost importance that it be kept

To Infinity and Beyond

Does anyone else have a favorite author with one popular book that seems to overshadow the rest of their (possibly more) deserving works? Reading Anthony Burgess has got me thinking about this. His ...and well-written. They're styles aren't any more difficult to pony than nadsat. Moreover, they make it obvious that Burgess had a real love of and talent for word play and telling historical stories
