New eyes on the universe

Herschel and Planck are on their way to L2, and soon I hope we'll be seeing new and exciting discoveries from the science teams involved. purplecthulhu , a friend of ours, and one of the scientists involved, posts his first impressions here . Well done PC!

The bizarre crap that gets accepted for arxiv.org. Once you go to the page, in the top right hand corner there is a link to the pdf file. Evidence #1: http://arxiv.org/abs/0903.5321 - check out the references and it also states that pi varies with time. wtf? Evidence #2: http://arxiv.org/pdf/0903.5377 - check out the figures, that is literally their 'galaxy cluster'

On Astrophysics and Nerd Cravings.

I'm addicted to Amazon.com. It's official. I've just spent the last god knows how long sitting around looking up books on astrophysics. I've been looking at 'Parallel Worlds' by Michio Kaku. The problem is, books like that are nearly impossible to find in St. Helens. The closest thing I found to a book on astrophysics was a GCSE science revision guide. WHAT? I did all that stuff a year ago! I have...

Why stars and supernovae cannot power AGN

This is not exactly my field, since I'm doing galactic black holes, which are the little siblings of the big ones thought to power AGN ( Active Galactic Nuclei ), but it's an interesting question anyway... including our own and Andromeda Galaxy, also known as M31, they are also confirmed by other, kinematical, methods. But accretion onto black holes and AGN are a topic for an other entry guys, really :D

Tangy sweetness with a hint of barleycorn.

...scale continues to rollick down the mountainside. Onwards and downwards it goes until at last it clobbers some poor unsuspecting fool and robs him of his hopes and dreams. Take that, career in astrophysics! No offense to astrophysicists who may happen across this blog (Like that'll happen.) Your job just isn't that important, though you should really get to workin' on those space stations for...
