Oh dear, less than a week to go, and I haven't packed anything, or done anything, and I still have no plane tickets, so I think it's best to run away and tremble forever. I had a dream about moving away...It was exactly what I'd expected, which was quite disappointing. I dunno- I think I'll stick to my epic war books. *is reading obsessively as a coping mechanism to deal with impending emigration*
So, live is a box full of surprises. I have all the plans to my friday (got to the movies with Ben after work) than I couldn't get off work in time and everything fell apart but well, it's okay, I got...ice-cream and this morning I got a purple-looking bruise in my tight 'cause I was trying to start my motocycle while I was doing three more things and let's say that's not a safe bet. Cute?
Stonehenge is a pretty interesting book, in terms of surmises about how the henge was built and the reasons for various things being there and so on. Unfortunately, as a novel it didn't work for me. The...goals are just about the same as Merlin. Easy to read, reasonable to curl up with and just relax, but it doesn't have the same life in my head as the Warlord Chronicles, and I'm not keeping it
I'd advise not reading the author's note at the end of the book, because it tips the novel's John Bull-ishness right over the edge into jingoism. The body of the book is hardly great literature, but it's...always at the focal point of the battle, and it grows contrived. I could also have done without constant mentions of Harper and his "Gaelic war cries." Nothing needles me quicker than cod Oirishness
Bernard Cornwell Sharpe's Eagle Richard Sharpe and the Talavera Campaign, July 1809 Viking 270 pp. This is one of the best of Sharpe's exploits, capturing a French regimental Imperial Eagle on the...sister, soon to cause plenty of trouble for Sharpe in her own right. As usual, I can't wait to get to the next adventure, but have rather a lot of other books to get through first, I'm afraid
The Last Kingdom by Bernard Cornwell Number Of Pages: 329 ISBN: 978-0-06-088718-6 Back Of Book Description: In the middle years of the ninth century, the fierce Danes stormed onto British...from the events affecting his life. Though the farther I got into the book, the more I realized why he was so distant. All in all this was an excellent read, I can't wait to read the next two!
I can start to describe how much I love Bernard Cornwell's Merlin. Really, the old man rules. I added a new quote to my sidebar 'blurb' in his honor. And I love Derfel too, someone has to slap that bitch of a king somewhere down the line.
Bernard Cornwell Sharpe's Havoc Richard Sharpe and the Campaign in Northern Portugal, Spring 1809 HarperCollins 306 pp One of the things I noticed was a similarity here between this book's villain,...them as a traitor. The prissy Lord Pumphrey, from the Foreign Office, also makes a return appearance here, as does Sir Arthur Wellesley, the future Duke of Wellington, who Sharpe last saw in India
