Avenue of the gods should have been a novella. What took the author 350 pages to accomplish could have been handled – with better results and more punch, in my opinion – in 90. The pulp sci-fi opus is...have been a worthy addition to the genre. It still might, if the author, Ed Morawski , finds someone to professionally edit his work. The Book of the Sword is the second book in Darkest Age , a new young adult fantasy series by A. J. Lake (published by Bloomsbury, the English publisher of the Harry Potter books). While I did not...protagonists. And while Lake (a retired teacher) is no Rowling, she is a competent and engaging author who can tell a good tale. I really wanted to like Paul Melko's "Singularity Ring". I'm a sucker for everything that has Singularity in the title. But it failed to draw me in. By the way -- maybe it's just me, but by stating the...are not woven seamlessly into the plot. That's actually a common flaw in many science fictionbooks. It's hard to do it right. Well, this is Paul Melko's first novel, so maybe there's still hope
by Steig Larsson (Translated by Reg Keeland) Hardcover 465 pages The world is not Black and White.. there is a lot of Gray. That is one of the things I liked about Larsson's first novel to be available...just like real life. Overall, I enjoyed the book and will pick up the next ones as they are available. Short answer: A bit long, but worth it. Next up: Something for halloween! The Graveyard Book
Last month I picked up a fewJeeves and Woosterbooks at the library and I've been addicted ever since. They are such the perfect antidote to all the crap in the news and unlike a lot of "funny" books...I would love to pal around with him, even and in spite of his tendency to land himself and his friends in the soup. He's the perfect example of David St. Hubbins'"fine line between stupid and clever.
Some Brief Thoughts on Saher Alam’s The Groom To Have Been. I recently read Saher Alam’s The Groom to Have Been which takes on as its literary forebear, Edith Warton’s The Age of Innocence. Before reading... Regardless, I encourage anyone to read the book and most importantly, to buy it, as it does make an interesting case study in the development of South Asian American literature in the post-9/11 era.
Sway: The Irrestible Pull of Irrational Behavior by Ori Brafman and Rom Brafman This bookexplores why humans react irrationally. It's a compendium of experiments that you learned from Psych 104/105...with regards to where their career is heading. The advice is simplistic, but works. I recommend it because it's entertaining based on how they present the information and the information itself.
After the book, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, was mentioned here in relation to the Doctor Who episodes, "Silence in the Library" and "Forest of the Dead", I knew I had to read...for the first time in the Library. It would be a real shame to waste her character. And, it would be really annoying to lose that continuity, if she meets a later incarnation of the Doctor instead
Author: George R. R. Martin Title: A Storm of Swords (Book Three of a Song of Ice and Fire) Genre: Fantasy Original Publisher: Spectra First Published: 2003 French Title: L'épée de feu French Publisher... next up is The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell which I'm reading in French so it's actually Le Moineau de Dieu . It's one of these books I've been hearing about for years, it's about time I tried it.
The White Darkness Geraldine McCaughrean HarperTempest 2007 (Copyright 2005) Wow! This Printz Award winner hooked me on the first page and I didn’t want it to end. The book was nothing...a 14 year old girl with hearing loss and low self-esteem. I would recommend this novel to any teen or adult! Pick it up, give it a try, I don’t think you will be disappointed. 5 stars.
