It's barely been a week since I got the final expansion to Race for the Galaxy , The Brink of War , and I've played over 30 games of it. Several have been 2-player advanced, and takeovers definitely...rarely - in less than 10% of games (if even that), but now it's up to around 10% of games. Placing a military world without intending to be the superior military power is absolutely asking for trouble
At a friend's birthday party that I could barely attend, I played a quick game of Chess . When I was around 8 or so, I was really into the game, reading a lot about it and playing any opportunity I could... I dislike Chess because you can consistently be a better player, but unless you put all your attention on each move, you can still lose/draw because of a small number of tactically bad moves
A colleague brought Risk into the office, as he had been playing it on the weekend and hadn't dropped it off home. I dislike Risk, not having played it enough to loathe it. Games drag on too long, there's...World and Nexus Ops come the closest in focus but not theme. Games about world domination and the annihilation of your enemies come with much more economic management and a heavier rules set
The other game I've been playing lately is Innovation , by the designer of the very well-regarded Glory to Rome . Glory to Rome is a card game about assembling utterly overpowered combos and slamming other players with them, and is frequently described as " Race for the Galaxy with interaction". I disagree with that characterisation of Race for the Galaxy, but I'm very willing to admit that Glory...
...support in the issues of Defence and Economy, one of which the voters are most concerned about. Win complete support in the current issue, and you win the state. Gameplay boils down to playing a card and performing a red-against-blue tug of war over the current four states in play. All the card effects are straightforward, but there are some satisfying combos you can set up - for example winning...
Microsoft have done something wacky and created a card game about security threat modelling with the catchy title of Elevation of Privilege . It's basically a trick-taking game where in order to play a card, you have to identify how the threat described on the card applies to your system. The cards come in suits that relate to classes of attacks (Spoofing, Tampering, Repudiation, Information Disclosure...
...be played like that, yet it has a massive amount of interaction. 2. Confusing Iconography The iconography is succinct and intuitive; however the game is very dense in information. The simplest card has a minimum of 3 pieces of information (cost, development/world, Victory Points) and the complex ones have more. What sets the game apart from the messy world of CCGs is that the special effects...
