Misogyny in SF/F – Some Thoughts

...narratives in epic fantasy, comics, and hard science fiction (places where androcentrism is currently at its strongest). Men, stop living your whole literary life in safe comfort and the selfishness culture has taught you, because your comfortable reading habits are making things more difficult for those of us who don’t have the privilege of being white male cis. Be part of the solution, not a part...

Man-made ecodisasters, "Far far away" edition

Cascading planetary-wide ecosystem effects of the extirpation of apex predatory Krayt dragons on Tatooine A well thought-out article on the impact of the loss of these beautiful, peaceful creatures. Goes well with The People's History of Tattooine , if you haven't read that either. ("What if Mos Eisley wasn’t really that wretched and it was just Obi Wan being racist again?")

Why Do People Run Into Fire?

This past weekend, a man ran into an effigy burn and died , apparently as a premeditated suicide. This occurred at Element 11 , a regional Burning Man event in the Utah desert. The Utah Burner community...myths of similar characters. Not to mention the cultural mythology of my teenage years, Pink Floyd, with this great live performance of Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun with a gong on fire

The Two Most Influential Science-Fiction Films of the 1930’s

Originally published at Robert Mitchell Evans . You can comment here or there . So here’s the next in my continuing essay series. Before I dig into the two films and my arguments for selecting...for decades, Things to Come gave us the clean art-deco city of the future that lasted all the up to Logan’s Run , and it gave the idea that people in the future would wear terribly silly fashions.

I think the climate is changing

Originally published at Robert Mitchell Evans . You can comment here or there . And I mean the political climate. Yesterday’s SCOTUS decision was a bad one in my opinion. It’s already having...blue one? It won’t. Add the hispanic votes walking out the door and the youth vote giving the conservative party the finger and I think things look nasty for the Republicans in presidential elections.

[EIFF] Metropolis; The Anomaly; The Green Inferno

...his enthusiasm for classic Italian horror directors like Lenzi and Deodato, and the inspiration for the setting- mostly Herzog's fault . What I thought he nailed completely was the 'slacktivist' culture. He was unimpressed by the slickly marketed, Twitter hashtagged stream of bollocks like Kony and Occupy, where 'you can just retweet something, sit back and get on with your comfortable life'....

Here a Doc, There a Doc…

Here’s a paradox:  When I’m at my busiest, having the most fun, doing the most things it would be exciting to write about, I don’ t have time to write.  Yeah, life is tough sometimes.  A lot...seats in one of the auditoriums made some of the movies seem too long…) All in all, a great way to spend a weekend.  And if you can see Slingshot, do. Mirrored from Mindy Klasky, Author .

Happy Midsummer!

Today is Midsummer Eve, tomorrow Midsummer Day. It's an old Swedish/Nordic tradtion which stems back from the heathen days. The 'proper' midsummer happens on Summer Solstice- the longest day- which is...than during the rest of the year. People are out in the woods or the archipelago- drink too much, get into fights, fall overboard... Well! That was that about Midsummer. I wish you all a happy one!
