Links and Stuff

Strange Horizons reviewer Dan Hartland has a blog , in which he talks about... politics. Um. He assures us there will be speculative-related content soon. Bioephemera has had so much cool stuff lately...of the winged cat urban legend (!), as well as pointers to the blog of the National Museum of Health and Medicine and a post on songs about science set to familiar tunes (filksongs, in other words)

So I was just reading some old posts...

...agree with, it can be hard to empathise with Le Guin's characters. But, maybe as someone who is not white (and, well, not completely Asian either), I'm more sensitive to this because I straddle two cultures, both of which I'm doomed to never be able to connect with fully because I was raised in a hybrid culture of Japano-American, but am obligated to choose one. I'm keenly aware of what I am all...

Sarah Palin is a good candidate despite the GOP

...politics, not one that they are good at." Sarah Palin's family, apart from their overt conservatism, is an exemplar of many things the Republicans sneer at on the other side of the so-called "culture wars": working mothers, stay-at-home dads, divorcees, premarital sex, pregnant teenagers, anti-nationalistm , and third-party politicians. There will likely be more features of their family dug...

Choosing teams in the digital age

Feels like I keep circling around the same topics (as well as probably repeating myself). Oh well—the worst that could happen is that I'll have the same "epiphanies" over and over again, amazing myself...from our pasts with which to contend. Again, while that's always been the case, we're losing much of the plausible deniability (on all sides) that used to help smooth the rough edges of stark reality

What I Have Been Up To (Aug 08)

...brief summary of what I have been up to in the past month, sorted in the categories that form the lines on the TaraTube (sort of like the weekly trackwork poster, I guess): What I did in... Culture Creation (Apple Green) Thought about why things become phenomenon Read about how people come to like things, and how ideas come to become movements Caught up with the news out there, both political...

Bagrec in the Night Garden

Cbeebies has changed the bedtime hour (the only children's telly we watch routinely with our children, between bathtime and bedtime) - it's goodbye to "The Rubbadubbers" (thank christ) and "64 Zoo Lane"...by Sam Jacob, which acknowledges the show's "atmosphere of sadness that is out of kilter with the upbeat rictus grin of most kid-fodder" is here- In the Night Garden - Surreal Landscape of Nostalgia

Evil off

I'm not sure about the concepts essentially behind TV. It's supposed to be a brian wrecking device that destroys creativity and critical thinking. There is always at 19:00 and 22:00 news on the biggest... and when done, you either get rejected or not. Rejection leads to pain, and I need that feeling badly. Then there is the possibility of getting a positive feedback, which might be as bad aswell. :

a simpler time and place

South Korea is almost as much hustle and bustle as Manhattan, but not our dad's place. 미선's father lives in a simple place and sat his washing machine in the tub because he never used it anyway. Last year...don't have any desire to make modifications in our own place or anything, but it is definitely not a bad thing. Oh, and as much as I hate using a dryer, I really miss it right now in this humidity
