No wonder the locals hated Imperial rule

From Wookiepedia, "The Executor-class measured 19 kilometers in length..." Looking up a prototypical ship-of-the-line, the HMS Dreadnought , we find a length of 160m and a displacement (weight) of.....motivation...Earth could "reasonably" produce 2-3 Executors per year. I suspect the best answer lies somewhere between these numbers. Oh well. If I want realism I guess it's back to playing Traveler..

The Non-Utility of the Bechdel Test

Originally published at Robert Mitchell Evans . You can comment here or there . Hmm what’s this I see? A hornet’s nest? Let me get a stick surely nothing bad will come from probing it, right...it for me a tool not to be trusted. Ferreting out sexism in a piece of art can require a subtle eye, it is not achieved by a test less complex than Buzzfeed’s which Game of Thrones House are you?

A Brief Return to Politics

...certain that one philosophy or strain of through has got it all worked out. Worse yet for me I happen to have a number of positions that end up being mutually exclusive in our crude national political culture. For example I fully support marriage equality and I also support Second Amendment rights. It’s fairly difficult to find a person to vote of that fits both those bills. (yes I know about the...

The usefulness of a character study

Originally published at Robert Mitchell Evans . You can comment here or there . In my writing I often employ a character study as a tool to help me out when I am stuck or confused about a character...and mine were somehow at odds. I could not simply walk off though, I need to know for my own sake what is at the root of the divergence. Why do I feel this way? Read the rest of this entry »

Thoughts on hysterical arguments

Originally published at Robert Mitchell Evans . You can comment here or there . I don’t mean arguments that intent or by accident become terribly humorous, but rather arguments that are expressed...myself won’t change a thing. No one I know uses the hyperbole as a conscious tactic, and as such they will continue to lob them like errant grenades, but I wanted to get my thoughts out there.

Personal Moral Standard and Public Accommodation

Oh, "Arrow"

I'm watching "Arrow", based on the Green Arrow from DC comics. It pulls liberally from the 40+ years of comic history, of which I've read maybe 1. Every so often it does this sort of thing: [person onscreen...get going...have to head home to Central City!" Me: Say hi to Barry when you get there. [person] "I should be home in a...flash." LMAO. (no spoilers please; I'm still chewing through the series

Halloween is Burning Man for Normal People

Halloween is Burning Man for normal people. Families put significant effort and money into decorating their home theme camp. People get dressed up in sexy, creative, and unusual costumes. They wander...eat more stimulants and drink more booze than they should. It's a spiritual experience for some, an artistic outlet for others, and a bunch just treat it as a visually stimulating excuse to party.

Too long for twitter: dreaming about the culture

This morning while waking up I was dreaming about the culture. It started off as a pretty normal dream involving a hidden base where we lived, with an alien space ship inside of it. The main part was that it was well protected about the rain ;). (It rained a lot here yesterday) Then it went a bit Casablanca on me because another space ship case to visit the base. The avatar of that ship talked with...
