[LINK] "Immigrants sought to fill vacancies in food industry"

In Alberta during the recent economic boom, Tim Horton's coffee shops offered signing bonuses in the form of scholarships to new workers, in a desperate attempt to secure a workforce. This attitude,...of age. Projections suggest that by the year 2025 the population of 15- to 24-year-olds in Canada will actually decline by 345,500." Nothing can go wrong with guest worker schemes , I guess

How I lost me and you lost you;

...want to ingest, figures and facts that refused to sink in. I don't like memorising chunks of theory and regurgigating them, it's the lazy bug in me. Possibly why I tend to like to do questions in economics with a bit of a preamble that then require you to analyse the matter. Mrs Ip was examining my essays and my style and she ended up warning me that it's dangerous, because my lack of content...

We are supporting Which Orwellianists left?

Hayek wrote the book in 1944. In 1956, Hayek thought that his book made the argument that the Orwellian right says it does not make. By 1976, however, history had been "revised." [ cf We Have Always...Right Department) ] What I love most about the Freak show is how regularly the realignment keeps realligning... All Hail Great Leader for he has kept us free from the Horrors of Wars and Wall Street

Death of the American Dream, Part III

The third criteria in Burning Man's definition of The American Dream (TAD), is a college education. A U.S. News & World Report article states, "The cost of a year of college rose by about 6 percent in...students strongly suited to academics to college, perhaps there would be less need to "coddle" students and the actual quality of the education being delivered would rise to match the rise in its cost

Definition of recession and anti-communication

A quick little throwaway line in in this BBC article about the US recession sorta struck me. When I was learning economics, I learned that two quarters of negative growth is the definition of a recession. Four quarters of negative growth was a depression. This is a nice and handy, easily defined, set of terms. It says, clearly and unambiguously, what a recession or depression is. But the article...

Butterflies

It is said that butterflies are a good indicator of a healthy ecosystem. If you take a bunch of butterflies and dump them in your toxic garden, your garden will not get better. Odds are the butterflies...just go elsewhere, although there is a chance you could have a toxic garden full of dead butterflies when all is said and done. It is said the stock market is a good indicator of a healthy economy..

POLITICS: States that give, states that get

Of the states that get more money than they give, 84% are Republican. Of the states that give more money than they get, 78% are Democratic. NOW who's redistributing wealth unfairly? Details here.

Bad News is Good News?

With the exception of the Fed's rate cut to 1% yesterday, none of the news has been good. (The depressed price of oil could be viewed as good, except that's on the expectation of a global depression, which...is down, consumer spending is down, big companies are announcing layoffs, GDP is down, international markets are doing very poorly. And yet the market is up ~1000 (~12.5%) since Tuesday morning
