It's a Box Company; They Make Boxes

I'm about two thirds of the way through the second season of Lost and I've already established an absurd theory (as I've decided to support by fabricating faux-evidence): In other news, someone...movies? And what about the whole "you can't read text in your dreams" thing that folks have claimed for years, yet I (and others, like yamiko ) have clearly experienced evidence to the contrary

Words are Like a Teenage Star

Person A: Thank you! Person B: You're welcome! Just what is Person A welcome to do? Thank Person B again? Ask Person B again for the task that Person A is thankful for? It came to mind yesterday...language here] " disclaimer in a number of Euro languages, but I'm quite sure I couldn't pull it off in ASL. Actually, what would the signs for " I don't really speak ASL " be, moominmolly

The Swedish Connection

I am enthralled by this etymology. Ventana derives from the Latin word for wind, ventus. English window has a similar connection with the wind. It derives from the Scandinavian word vindauga, a combination of vindr ‘wind’ and auga ‘eye’. So a window is, literally, the eye through which the wind enters.

Транс

(копаясь в словаре, OED) Согласно Св. Алексису (12 век) транс это переход от жизни к смерти. Интересно, что уже в 1696 году появляется (в словарях) эта психо-рекурсия, хорошо нам знакомая: "Trance,... За 300 лет нашего развития мало что изменилось, до сих пор все эти интересные состояния человека не только плохо понятны другим людям, но и, очень часто, совершенно непонятны самому человеку

Word of the Day/Week

Wow, haven't had one of these in awhile. So, where did the word 'ain't' come from? Yes, yes, I know 'ain't' ain't a word. But it used to be! Let me start off by saying that hyper-correction is a linguistics...what is 'ain't' a contraction of?' and you can have the last word by saying, 'Am not' and promptly stick out your tongue :P -Rachel PS. This all came from Latin class. Gotta love those classics ^-
