This past weekend, I attended the Ohio Valley Filk Festival , a three-day convention focusing on the filkmusic genre. ('Filk' is the music of science fiction and fantasy. Its precise definition has been debated for years, mostly by people with nothing better to do with their time. This includes me. It's a fun, fun argument.) Lots of fun, lots of friendship, and lots of time spent in the Columbus...
... : (the world smashed) POW On to the Best Classic. This is vixy singing. I think she was singing Archetype Cafe. Juanita Coulson performs Chess. The concert of course ended with the Best Filk Song nominees, but I didn't get any pictures I thought were worth posting. I did not vote on line this year because I actually had not heard two of the nominees. One Small Boat is touching, and...
...the time. catsittingstill reminded me that she'd been interested in hearing some of my new songs, so we swapped songs back and forth for a bit in the hallway outside the improv session. A filk later accreted around us and I determined -- after singing one song at full voice -- that I didn't have enough voice to handle a space of that size. I apologized to filkertom and took my...
We actually got back from OVFF around 6 PM local time, discovering that something resembling winter had arrived in the meantime as we drove through a bit of sleet and snow at the bottom of the lake. Everyone's pretty tired, which shouldn't be a surprise. More about OVFF tomorrow. More about sleep tonight. :)
On Sunday, I got up as early as I could force myself to and headed back to the con. Listened to music in the main room and socialized with people I knew from the night before, mostly. I bought two CDs...I know it can't be so.... I think the last one in particular has promise. Hypothetical readers, what do you think? Did you have a good time, those of you who were there and whose LJs I do not read?
...drive-through restaurant. I played a fun boardgame called "Stoneage" in there as well, and lost badly. I also met a lot of cool people who I hope to stay in touch with I eventually ended up in a filk circle with mdlbear , joecoustic and others whose LJ tags I didn't know or catch. I heard lots of great stuff and (with great apprehension) sang "Abusive Monopoly". This was the first...
...I also wanted "Apology" to win, by daisy_knotwise and billroper . It's one of my all-time favorites to sign.) And I was *very* pleased that Andy's "Uplift" at last won for best filksong! So long overdue! It's in my top ten all-time favorite filks to sign, right up there with tarkrai 's "Journey's Done" and Julia Ecklar's "Burnish Me Bright." It is all ohiblather...
... and took in the
concerts, which were wonderful as usual.
People have already posted the details of the Pegasus awards, so I don't
have to.
After the Peggies I crawled off to a thinly-populated filkroom so I could
sing The River to joecoustic , who had missed the one-shots and
wanted to hear it. It was starting to fill up around midnight, when I
decamped to the Just Plain Folks theme...
