How to Spot Fairies

... fairies, elves and goblins are somewhat relevant to a new story I’m writing, ‘The Star Engine Book One: ELF’ , which you can read online as it’s being written. Specifically I’m interested in the folklore surrounding these magical beings. Now right now you’re thinking that there’s no chance of spotting any fairies… after all, Reginald Scot , who wrote one of the first books on conjuring tricks...

Who wants to be a werewolf? (My guest blog at the Midnight Moon Cafe)

... In honor of Halloween and my latest release, In a Wolf’s Eyes , I’m going to focus on werewolves. There are a lot of different kinds of werewolves out there these days, from the evil monsters of folklore to the sexy heroes of modern romances. Ethan, the werewolf from In a Wolf’s Eyes , is a thoroughly modern werewolf. He doesn’t have to kill to live, he can shift any time rather than only during...

31 Tales of Terror: Day Twenty-Three

...Baring-Gould was a nineteenth century parson and scholar with a keen interest in the supernatural. I read his BOOK OF WEREWOLVES earlier this year and was impressed with his anthropological take on folklore. When I learned he’d also written ghost stories, I knew I’d have to seek some out. I have to admit, I’ve chosen “Glamr” more for its age than for its ghosts. Baring-Gould has retold a very old...

Strange story scraps and inspirations

I haven't been reading Naruto or D.Gray-man the past few weeks - mostly, I've just been too damn busy/mentally wrung out, but actually, it's been kinda nice. I'm keeping the downloads, though, so I may...first shot, or leaves many witnesses.) And eventually the main character discovers that it's been his reincarnations the demon has been hunting down, and... well. The plot thickens, so to speak. ^_

...scenes make it worth the read. (Of the three stories, I liked Jung-Sum's story the best, for reasons that'll be obvious to anyone who's read The Jade Peony .) I also finished a book of Quebec folklore -- Créatures fantastiques du Québec . Most of it was the usual fare you get from European folklore -- werewolves, sea serpents, ape-men, mermaids, angry ghosts. One that made me laugh out loud...

...I don’t ruin the Paul Simon CDs by listening to them too much. I also want a novel or something as light before-bed reading. Any recommendations would be rejoiced. I love satire, fantasy, sci-fi, folklore, historical fiction, and fiction with interesting family dynamics. There’s also a book about genetics that would be nice to find. I started it a few years ago, but it was too scientific, so I...

...about the negative views a lot of people in the US have about Middle Eastern societies and Islam. I knew I wanted to use a graphic novel format to represent the gender inequalities in fairytales and folklore (and because then I could essentially get graded for reading cool old stories), but I didn’t want to play out the same old stereotypes. I also REALLY didn’t feel like drawing out a mainstream...
