Things I figured out about Haskell today

Maybe is the same thing as Kleene ? (the "zero or one" operator in regular expressions). A typeclass is the same thing as an STL concept, but a typeclass actually means it. Now if I can just get my head around monads, I'm set.

Wow, today must be a troll-ific Friday.

Thumbs Down for Clojure - wow..., look, I'm all for quality and Quality and purity and all that myself. Really, I am, but, um, I use stuff that sucks all the time. Someone should point out that Lisp...for purity. Or he could just be why Richard Gabriel wrote Worse Is Better , and should go figure out Wabi-Sabi . Edit: For the complex humor/nuance impaired, compare this post to my previous one

Abstraction or Get Over It.

I have to admit, I'm not the biggest fan of Python's BDFL, but this post kinda typifies it: IronPython in Action and the Decline of Windows . You see, he discusses the tedium of constructing a GUI in...dated and ridiculous... and ...XAML adds a declarative interface to WPF control instantiation, and the out-of-the-box WPF controls are more powerful than most other GUI toolkits, including HTML.

I'm a believer in type inference now...

Okay, I have, for a while now, understood the notion that some "types" can become rather long(exponential even in comparison to the code), and thus, realized that type inference is a useful tool in dealing...the "Commons Functor" project: It doesn't seem very active, plus its in the sandbox, so, no telling how that will work out. Plus, all the really useful basic stuff is about 3-4 hours work anyway

Stop me before I filk again

This is entirely my fault. Feel free to throw tomatoes, but no rocks please. (To the tune of "The Wild Rover". Apologies to Dennis Ritchie and people who don't like folk music. Also, the scansion and...quite sure what they'd seen But the girls saw my Sexp and came home with me. And it's (cons car cdr), Mapcar and lambda -- no more Will I be a C coder, no never, no more. Feel free to add new verses

Nice set of links on Functional Reactive Programming.

I just saw this on LtU: Dana which ties several threads together about "Functional Reactive Programming"(FRP). For those of you who might be on the verge of pressing "page down" and skimming this, I...to at some point make the leap from theory to practice. Personally, I wouldn't mind experimenting with FRP based systems, and in fact, I probably will, but today is not that day. Maybe soon though

?????????? ????????

Learn You A Haskell

[code] yes we can has nested list comprehensions

Suppose you're a bioinformaticist and you have a gapped multiple sequence alignment (that is, a bunch of similar protein sequences, with dots and dashes inserted to line them all up), and you want the...get_all_seqs()] (I'm really not sure how to describe the feeling of satisfaction I get from replacing ~20 lines of code with a list comprehension like this, but it's definitely rewarding.
