How to turn a Job Interview into a sales call.

...that he's not hiring because he's already got both installation trucks fully crewed and his shop is fully staffed.     We got talking about shop work anyway, and he mentioned that he wishes he had a lathe (one of the things on my resume) because he's getting the piss taken out of him by suppliers.    A ray of hope.   I ask him what sort of lathe work.   He says modified pipe fittings.   AH HA.   ...

Building a metal-working shop from scratch

...you can beg, borrow, or steal. It costs very little to build, and it works incredibly well. You then use your new foundry to melt aluminum scrap and cast the parts needed to build a metal lathe. The interesting part is that you actually use the partially-completed metal lathe as you're building it, to machine its own parts. Again I'll quote Gingery: Having been described as "the only...

Pieces-parts

...to that is already "Well, I'll just make some. It'll take a couple hours once I have a design." Simple pin-type connectors with screw backs would not be hard to make, even if I don't get a proper lathe this summer, and jacks with a little retaining clip ring embedded in there shouldn't be too hard, either. Looks like my next order for raw materials from McMaster-Carr might not be too far off.

Back in Action

...out how to open the bobbin compartment. Long story short, I think I broke the cover on it, and it's probably not worth fixing...however, there's a nice variable speed motor in there, connected to a foot pedal. Salvaging that and making a small 'lathe' (not intended to withstand the load of actively tooling something on it, but just for turning material like this) might become a side project sometime.

Lathe-y Bones

...anodising? I can't find one evening course in metalwork, even though I know my old school in Cork used to do evening courses like that. And I really don't want to go to the expense of buying a bastard-big lathe and jam it in my shed. Plus, it's been 16 years since I had a go of one of the fast-turney-hurty-hurty things so I'd be worried I'd either screw up the piece, or, less amusingly, myself. It can't...

[Lathe] For arrowforhire: No shit, there I was...

[Not lacing the lyrics through this one, but if you play it whilst you listen, I think it'll convey the idea. When Lathe first came into play, arrowforhire and I worked out that our characters knew each other, but we never quite got round to working out how. I imagine it could have gone a little something like this...] July, 2002 - Somewhere in Central America "Watch it, man, she looks...
