August 2014 Trip: Croydon Interlude

...planning stages of this trip I always had a few days set aside between France and the Worldcon for drinking beer. What I had a hard time making up my mind about was whether to drink beer in Belgium or in London. I went back and forth on this question for a very long time before I finally was persuaded by two things: 1) the tales of London's exploding, evolving microbrewery scene that I was hearing from...

Bank Holiday Weekend

...were also both enjoyable in different ways. Saturday I was up early doors to get all my chores and shopping done. Then a mooch around Camden with a friend, visiting some old haunts, then seeing the London Contemporary Orchestra at the Roundhouse as part of Reverb, curated by Imogen Heap. Very contemporary, mostly quite interesting. My friend had 'never seen anything like that, and may never do again...

Adventures in Visiting England and Conventions: a LONG post. Very long.

...myself that LonCon3 would not actually be terrifying. LonCon3 And then Thursday was con-going. Were it not for the amazing Kari and the amazing Phil, I doubt I would have made it to and across London: the Tube attempted to kill me, and proved rather confusing to hideously apprehensive me. But I survived the journey in time to check in to the tiny green-coloured Ibis (the middle grade of Ibis...

End of Loncon / Farewell London

... we spent just decompressing - and sending off the first of three packages back home (the third goes today.) Wednesday was a shopping day, starting with a visit to the Bond in Motion event at the London Film Museum, with most of the actual vehicles (and some models) from the Bond films. Each vehicle had an accompanying clip showing it in action but my friend Adrian and I would have preferred more...

Tube to the Train

No more Death March to London Pass today, as the pass is now expired; however, we still had one more pair of Zone 1-6 Travelcards, and we made full use of it traveling out to Epping at the far end of the Central Line, where we rode the Epping-Ongar Railway , a heritage railway running on the route of the former London Underground branch to Ongar from Epping. After breakfast, we walked to London Bridge...

High Speed Trip Summary

As in my previous entry, the 12-hour-plus tourism days we're keeping makes it impossible for me to write in-depth trip reports. If you want photos of those things I did photograph, look at my London Flickr Album and read the captions. Guards Museum (near our hotel) Bonus: As we left the Guards Museum, we saw the Guards forming up for what we assume must have been a portion of the Changing of...

Buckingham Palace

Ever since I was a small, small child, I have wanted to go inside Buckingham Palace. So when this trip came up, and I realized that I would actually be in London during the only two months out of the year that the palace is open, this immediately leapt to the top of my must do list. For most people, getting into Buckingham Palace works like this: you buy your tickets online or there, stand in line...

The Book Benches I was raving about on a previous entry

And here they are. I wasn't making them up. Hope you like them. It's not all of them obviously, they are 50 and I just can't go and find them all, so what I'm doing is looking for the ones I really want...bench. Featuring, the Librarian and Great A'Tuin, the space turtle. And finally. 'Dr. Seuss', 'Clarice Bean' and 'How to train your dragon' benches.
