On a basic level, I understand the comparison of No Country for Old Men to the Coen Brother's earlier films Fargo and Blood Simple - but in many ways their newest film is a culmination of their entire...together - letting us know what is off screen, pressing down, affecting and as important as what is on screen. The ending is a graceful moment of dialogue, setting this thriller apart from all others
The original Shrek film mercilessly skewered Disney, the Disney Corporation, Walt Disney and the entire canon of Disney animated films. Enchanted takes the high road and pays homage to them. As a... in particular. If there was even a contest, this film is the feel good film of the year. Nothing so fun as laughing at Disney while also - remembering that kid inside - smiling along with it
Wow. I expected to have fun in this movie. I didn't expect to be so damn impressed on nearly every level. The story of acceptance was born in the original John Waters film in 1988, but I wasn't familiar...of Divine nor the camp factor of Harvey Feirstein on stage - it's one of the great movie musical performances. Which is fitting, because Adam Shankman's Hairspray is one of the great movie musicals
I will need to write a lengthy review of this film later because I need to and this superior action film deserves it. While I try not to simply squee like a fangirl or geek out like a fanboy, I have to...it does something incredible with its structure; something I've never seen done in a film before. Make sure you know Identity and Supremacy well beforehand. The loyal shall be rewarded. More later
In comparing these films to a classic of science fiction horror, 28 Days Later is like Alien and 28 Weeks Later is like Aliens . And in both cases, the originals are the best - but the sequels...action blockbuster before it is anything else. And as a sequel to 28 Days Later... its ballsiness and downbeat ending seems justified. But damn, I still can't get some of those images out of my head
All I know about Iwo Jima is the statue in Rosslyn, Virginia and the photograph it's based on. I really wish I'd seen Clint Eastwood's Flags of our Fathers last year - but it came and went far too quickly...more interested in seeing how Flags of our Fathers treats the landing at Iwo Jima from the U.S. perspective. Hopefully it is as revealing and confronting as this film show us of the other side
Like vampire movies? This is a vampire movie you'll love. The concept is so deceptively simple, it's a wonder it has never been done before. A town in northern Alaska, about to go through thirty days...a film doesn't need to be more than what the poster says it is - especially when it is executed this well. It's frightening, above all else. And disturbing. And damn scary. What more do you want
Frank Oz directs what can only be described as a charming comedy - occasionally interrupted by bad language and scatalogical humour. Matthew Macfadyen stars with real-life wife (and Spooks co-star) Keeley Hawes. Utter madness provided by Alan Tudyk, who provides a flawless British accent throughout... when he is able to form words, after accidentally taking some illicit drugs.
Tony Gilroy's directorial debut is a revelation. It harkens back to the paranoid thrillers of the 70s but this one doesn't seem too far removed from the reality of today's corporate irresponsibility and...me if there were Oscar nominations for this film, it is deserving on nearly every level. Michael Clayton is smart, assured, subtle, mesmerising and uncompromising - much like the title character himself
Not brave. Stupid. In this film's entire running time - I think I should have measured its length by the number of times I rolled my eyes - there's maybe a couple of minutes where I felt like I was watching...USING SARAH McLACHLAN SONGS TO MAKE THE AUDIENCE WEEP. Sadly, as much as I love Sarah, that is also the sign of choosing the easy thing, rather than trying to find something meaningful or original
