October's books (and September's book)

37. The Mommy Brain: How Motherhood Makes Us Smarter by Katherine Ellison Lots of studies done on rats in this one. The author is an investigative journalist, and that is evident throughout. She reports...is a history of libraries, but much more. It delves into libraries' role in our societal conscious and continually praises the beauty of books. Lots to learn from this book, and just as much to enjoy

Title: Funny Letters From Famous People Author: Charles Osgood Format: Paperback Date Started: 10.29.08 Date Ended: 10.29.08 Number of Pages: 223 Grade: Summary: This lightweight... In the end, this male-heavy book reveals less humor and more pain than the letter writers intended, which may be something of which old school CBS anchor Osgood is aware. Comments: Hillarious

Review: Descartes' Bones by Russell Shorto

Descartes’ Bones: A Skeletal History of the Conflict Between Faith and Reason by Russell Shorto   Russell Shorto has taken a unique approach to the conflict between science and religion...focus of the book, only a thread used sporadically to tie Shorto’s ideas together.               To read more about Descartes’ Bones , buy it or add it to your wishlist, click here. .

Alexander and the Wonderfu, Marvelous, Excellent, Terrific Ninety Days by Judith Viorst

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day has always been one of my favorites books of all time, so I admit that I picked this book up for the title alone.  Luckily, I was disappointed...again.  She shares details to illustrate her points, but some of them are from other families, and she never overshares, keeping this snappy little tome moving along at a brisk pace.  A fun, quick read.

#44-Heavy Words, Lightly Thrown-by Chris Roberts

#44 is 'Heavy Words Lightly Thrown: The Reason Behind the Rhyme', by Chris Roberts. Per the jacket summary: "Nursery rhymes are rarely as innocent as they seem-a wealth of concealed meanings hids..."down in the bear pit, swilling beer" along-side the adults. *snorts* There's a subtle humor, too, very British, that I liked. Made for entertaining reading, though I can't say it was a quick read.

[028] Non-fiction: A Study in Letters

Alas -- an agreeable atrocity! Absolute awareness awaits anguish after an anticipated awakening. Be bold, be brash, be best: bewildered butterfly breeders boast benign but beautiful beliefs -- beware... dastardly dreams develop during dubious dinner dates. Endure evermore: evil eavesdroppers elicit echos, eventually exiled; essentially eliminated. Forward? Flighty foxes forever fight for favoritism

Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addition by David Sheff

87 I heard about this book while I was reading book reviews out of a magazine.  Now, I don’t remember the exact magazine, but I can say with a certain amount of certainty that it was for people...in books related to drugs or family struggle.  There is also a book that his son wrote, called TWEAK, from his point of view that is also out in stores now.  Wait for this review in coming weeks.
