Tom Fagan 1932-2008

As reported by The Comics Reporter , Mark Evanier , The Rutland Herald , and others, Tom Fagan died on Tuesday at the age of 76. Tom Fagan was a comic-book fan who founded the annual Rutland, Vermont...not let circumstances stand in the way of staying current with friends and acquaintances. Thanks, Tom, for being one of those who opened the door and let me in so that I could become who I am today

Bernadette Greevy RIP

It was very sad to hear that a true lady and artist, Bernadette Greevy, passed away on Friday.  She was a lovely interpreter of Mahler in particular (although her Bach was lovely also) and she'll be sadly missed.

Stolen From Us All: Malalai Kakar

A lot of times of late, I've been letting the reports of the dead from Afghanistan go unremarked and that's been my mistake. This time, Afghanistan suffered an undeserved loss. Her name was Malalai Kakar...the start of 2002 to its wrongly premature end elsewhere on the Web. My advice, based on half-remembered articles, would be to cross-reference against the Toronto Star . Humanity lost a good one here

Requiem for a Samsung

Here is our trusty, ancient, former microwave. It wasn't pretty, as you can see. It was bulky. It had no light to shine on the food it was heating. We often got made fun of for its obselescence, it... buttons , as I reach for the Timer dial. The old microwave will be missed, though there is comfort, a feeling of safety, in knowing that my new appliance was built after I left elementary school

...the Lobster in 2006 and bothered everyone I knew by reading great long chunks of it out loud. This transcript of a commencement speech he gave at Kenyon College has been referenced a lot in the obituaries I've looked at, predominantly because there's a passage where he talks explicity about suicide, but the speech is really about the usual big DFW themes, perception, consciousness, and a sincere...

'Fandom Obituaries: the last goodbye.

'Journal deletion' is once again the phrase on everyone's lips, but this time it's not our illustrious hosts doing the deleting. How many of us have logged in recently to discover that someone on our... and how 'we' deal with the 'not knowingness' of it all. I'm interested to hear what you've all got to say. Can't guarantee I've got the time to answer, but I've definitely got the time to read. :)

Damn

Prog rock legend Richard Wright passes away. Damn. This does officially mean I will never see Pink Floyd live. This makes me sad. I know a lot of people have mixed opinions on Pink Floyd but their...trotted out  as masterpieces but, seriously, go and actually listen to them. If there is (as some of you like to believe) a great gig in the sky - it just gained one hell of a keyboard player.

RIP Richard Wright

A sad day for Pink Floyd fans, as group co-founder and keyboardist Rick Wright has died from cancer at 65.  While Gilmour and Waters took the spotlight, Wright was an essential part of their sound.  Talent...Diamond" from the Wish You Were Here album.  My favorite passage of his was the understated opening to "Sheep." ---------------- Now playing: Pink Floyd - Money via FoxyTunes
