WITH a blockbuster Sherlock Holmes film good to go, chances are more than a few fans of the super-sleuth will be encouraged back to the books. Running to a cool 1,122 pages, the paperback version...death. But how many know the name of the only adversary who ever out-witted the heroin-taking, violin-playing sleuth? "Aha! The game is afoot", as Holmes himself was often heard to declare...

It's kind of insane, I know, to make a purchase like this at a time when I am trying to clear more books OUT of my house, but I have just bought THE NEW ANNOTATED SHERLOCK HOLMES  (edited with notes...criminals? Hours of endless fun!  Such intense scrutiny devoted to a fictional character makes me think -- can Holmes truly be called fictional? He seems more real than many people who actually lived.
