Just in time for Halloween, Frankenstien Hubble has returned from the dead and sent back a pretty picture. Engineers finally got Side B (a data handling computer) up and running for the first time since 1990! ...be biased by the fact that we're also incredibly early in our technological development. Civilization only started a few thousand years ago, the telescope a few hundred, radio about a hundred, and space flight about fifty. So what if we're on the verge of discovering a technology that makes it trivial to communicate over incredibly long distances (like Piers Anthony's Macroscope), but only if you...
... When there is a great new discovery or a radical change in thinking, it usually takes time for such changes to filter through the publishing world into a library. A good example of this is space science. NASA and other science agencies are discovering new things every week. And for a student to write a report on Mars, books will not give them the most current data. The Internet is the perfect...
Nothing on the DVR tonight... so, at this point we're up for just about anything. I usuallygravitate to something SCI-FI related. ... The electronics that operate those instruments should generate enough heat to keep them, and the camera, functioning for awhile. The fourth heater — one of two survivalheaters that warm the spacecraft and its batteries — would be shut down in a final step. This would leave only one survival heater to run out on its own. "At that point, Phoenix will be at the mercy of Mars," said Chris Lewickie...
Opals have long been prized for their luster and beauty but the discovery that they also exist on Mars is proving to be gem of another variety. The deposits, spotted from orbit by a NASA probe, indicate...the life of the lander by several weeks." Phoenix landed five months ago to determine if Mars had the right ingredients to support life. http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2008/10/29/mars-opals-water.html
