William Gibson has said many times in interviews that he knew very little about computers when he wrote his groundbreaking, genre-spawning novel Neuromancer . And yet somehow, all the way back in 1984... Spook Country (or indeed any of Gibson’s works). That just means you might want to flip right back to the first page after you’ve finished to read the book again. Which I’ll certainly be doing soon.

So I’m in Houston, Texas right now for a big ol’ reunion of my wife’s family. Somewhere around 30 people in all whose political views span the spectrum between rabid leftists and rabid rightists. I just finished reading the new interview with the "father of cyberspace" William Gibson , conducted by my friend and mentor Michael Marano for the new issue of SciFi Magazine , and found it absolutely...perceptions on the science fiction genre and the nature of the "future" in today's present society. The issue to look for is the one featured here below, the one with Starbuck on the cover.

While I traveled to and in Japan I brought my usual magazines to toss as read, plus several paperbacks to do the same with. The books I read were: The Somnambulist by Jonathan Barnes (Victor Gollancz... Echo Park . Just before I left I finished William Gibson's remarkable new novel, Spook Country and loved it. It's smart, funny, policially saavy, and possibly one of his most satisfying works.

Must not read new Cordwainer Smith book . :) Must finish Spook Country . And I really ought to finish all those Java books I've been reading. (OK, it's not really "new" in the sense that everything...this link is accurate. It refers to a 1974 book, The Underpeople , by Smith, and We The Underpeople being a new edition of same. I thought that We The Underpeople was an entirely new collection
