Saturday night, I spent the evening in a smoke-filled enclosure with ear-ringing noise to witness a first for Windsor: Monster Trucks ripping through cars! Monster Spectacular held its first of...for letting me photograph this. There's a second performance of Monster Spectacular today (Sunday) at 2pm. I believe there are actually still tickets available, here if you want to attend!
The Windsor Spitfires became champions of the Ontario Hockey League, and recipients of the J. Ross Robertson Cup on Friday, May 8th, 2009! More photos from the game, and the celebrations afterward... plenty of press on hand. The Windsor Spitfires are now off to Rimouski, Quebec, to compete in the Memorial Cup tournament. Congratulations Spitfires, and congratulations Windsor!
In a good turn of events for the Windsor area, the Windsor Spitfires are poised to capture the Ontario Hockey League title, and the J. Ross Robertson Cup , this Friday in Windsor at the WFCU Centre...series logo beneath the ice, shows the Cup which will be presented on ice to the winning team. The Spitfires are 3-1 in this series, and only need one more win to be champions. Go Windsor!!
Guests at the WFCU Centre's performance of Cirque Sublime were treated to the unusual, addictive and unique world of ADAMO on Sunday night. Cirque Sublime, a Canadian entertainment-circus group...astonished faces. More catapult action. Amazing acrobatic feats by two very capable folks. An outstanding accomplishment! And a great evening.
Today "Stars On Ice" presented by Smuckers and Sears, came to the WFCU Centre for a figure skating performance! More photos after "Read More.." On the way into the building, I spoke with striking...for commercial purposes. In order to photograph this event, I had to meet these conditions. Please respect them. Also, they are only appearing here in low resolution with a max size of 500px.
Work is wrapping up near the WFCU Centre, on a new bridge over Little River. The bridge will link both stretches of McHugh Street, which will allow it to run from Banwell to Lauzon Rd. The bridge...started following the arena construction in late 2006 / early 2007. The bridge should be finished within a month or two, and McHugh St. E. is expected to become quite the arterial road for the arena.
Both City of Windsor CUPE Locals ( 82 & 543 ) are on strike, and they held a combined rally at the WFCU Centre this afternoon. On the way down McHugh Street, I opted not to cross the picket lines...traffic making their way into the arena at around 1:50pm, game started at 4. An interesting time for the city. Photos from the various picket locations, and interesting signs for tomorrow's post.
Last night, the Stanley Cup made a visit to the WFCU Centre for the Windsor Spitfires' last officially scheduled home came. The Cup was lent to the WFCU Centre for a few hours by the Red Wings organization...in sports to be contained within an ornate box, but the cup officially travels in a humble box on wheels. By the end of the game, it was time for the Cup to return to the Detroit Red Wings.
The Windsor Spitfires played their first game at the new WFCU Centre last night. I'll have many, many, many more photos a little later in the day today.
Windsor's WFCU Centre, the new home of the Windsor Spitfires, will open tomorrow to a crowd of 6,800 fans, plus press and dignitaries. I'm extremely grateful to Global Spectrum Inc. for giving me...New Windsor Arena! Congratulations Windsor on achieving a dream, after 25+ years of decision making. It may have cost a pretty penny, but I think anyone will agree, it suuuuurrrrre is nice!
